How to Develop a Better Attitude

You have some attitude! How could you say such a thing? That was uncalled for! Have these words ever been spoken to you? If so, do not get defensive. Take a moment and reflect. Are you just having a bad day or is it a characteristic trait? If you think you may have a bad attitude or are overly aggressive when dealing with people, then there are steps to correct it.

What about your typical conversations with colleagues and coworkers? Are they confrontational with everyone trying to get the upper hand? Many people engage in conversations as if they are doing battle with an opponent. They believe that having a snippy or sarcastic response is acceptable, maybe even cute.

The reality is, not only is it not acceptable in the workplace but it may also paint a negative picture of who you are and what you are capable of accomplishing. While at work, you should conduct every meeting, and hold every conversation as though you were on a job interview.

Always be professional. Never whisper around the water cooler, spread rumors or gossip. Never say anything inflammatory and never, ever put any of it in an eMail! The more negativity or bad attitude you display will only result in people treating you with less respect. Isn’t it hard enough to move up the corporate ladder already? Do you really want to be treated as though you have less value than you actually do? Maybe this is not the issue at all.

Perhaps, we all retain an innate sense to fight back when we feel we have been wronged. The way to successfully navigate these “word” battles is to train yourself to say nothing. Listen closely and do not respond immediately. Even walking away could be a strategy! Take comfort in knowing there will always be time to exact revenge if it is truly necessary.

There is a famous quote, “A diplomat thinks twice before saying nothing”. This is not only true but perhaps the best advice I could share on the topic. Always take the high road and let them have their chuckle. If you play the game correctly, it will be you that has the last laugh.

Absolutely - there is a place for confrontation and for attitude and there is a place for diplomacy. Knowing when to use either is key.

Great philosophy! It's always (well nearly!) the calm, considerate, level-headed people that win the day. Courtesy and manners are so important. Voted up and useful.
